STEAMSPA Steam Generators:
When the topic of Steam Generators come up, I am hearing the SteamSpa name more and more every day. Relative to the dinosaurs of the industry, SteamSpa is one of the newer Steam Generator companies, comparatively, but have still been in the industry for just under two decades. Whatever they are doing they have managed to find their way in to most of the major appliance retailers in the country and are slowly taking market share from the big brand names.
If you google Steam Generators, the big box stores are now carrying this brand. Manufactured by the larger bath appliance company “Spa World” it seems that they are leveraging this larger company's industry connections to grow their brand quicker.
One thing I was surprised to see was that SteamSpa has spent a lot of money on filing patents on many new features (I talk about the difference between Trademarking and Patenting in more detail elsewhere on my site and why it's good to always research if a company has filed any). A lot of other steam companies don’t want to spend the money to create an actual Patent.
Each unit comes standard with the Auto-Drain function, which after every session flushes stagnant water in the unit and prevent calcification and deterioration of water sensor and heating elements and what they are mainly known for, their dual tank system.
Before SteamSpa, water came from a hot line which would run 24 hours a day and allow for instant steam. However SteamSpa was able to create the same effect by splitting the tanks into a small primary tank, heating quicker and producing steam almost instantaneously, and a larger secondary tank which will heat water to the unit while steam is emitting from the primary tank. This allows for seamless transitions in heating to emitting and is what SteamSpa calls their continuous steam feature. This prevent sporadic steam and fluctuating temperatures during use of the steam room.
When I took the laser thermometers and humidity meters every 2 minutes and checked, any variance was almost non-existent. Most rooms when you walk in every 2-5 minutes you get different readings that fluctuate. This means you will not have to keep it turned on at all times and therefore will save electricity..but this really only is a big deal if your electricity bill is already high or you’re on a very tight budget.
SteamSpa guarantees their customers satisfaction and gives a 100% money back on their generators so if the steamer is too powerful or not powerful enough for your room they are willing to work with their customers to take back the unit and provide the appropriate size.
Note: If you want a cheaper price on a SteamSpa buying a returned unit that didn't meet someone’s steam room needs or refurbished one is a way to get at a lower cost with the same warranty. However this depends on if there is any in inventory.
In terms of the sound level criteria I review, the SteamSpa generators are the 2nd quietest of brands I have tested (as analyzed with my Digital Sound Meter), with Thermasol being the quietest. The way the steam comes out of the steam head on a SteamSpa unit, you don't hear a loud pop as it comes out. You don't even notice when the steam is coming out of the smaller and larger tank. Its function is so quiet, which actually fooled me a couple times, thinking that it was not turned on. When you are relaxing, that pop noise when the steam first comes out can take you out of relaxation and deep thought and I like to do a lot of meditation in my steam bath, so I find this particularly important.
Overall this company came along and picked aspects that the very best steam companies were offering and built upon what was already created and chose to offer it at a better price point which in a way was probably necessary because of arriving later to the industry and to be more competitive.
They have caused a lot of waves in the Steam industry, but this kind of thing happens all the time in different product categories and allows for competitive pricing. My basic conclusion rating of this brand is: While this is a Tier 1 brand in terms of quality and features, they have a Tier 2’s price point.
Many people are confused on Thermasol and SteamSpa since people are saying their specs look the same.
I have reviewed both and I will say the steam quality is totally different.
This is a picture of the SteamSpa I took when I noticed water was leaking out of the steam head.
One is a low psi model, the other uses very expensive high psi pressure release valves and water pressure reducers. One is made in the USA, the other is a Chinese import.
I will say that Steamspa is better than any low psi single tank generator. I have also reviewed Mr. Steam, Kohler, Elite Steam, and Steamist and compared the lowest psi to the highest psi models and the highest psi model is a night and day difference in quality to the lowest psi model I tested.
