Single Vs. Dual Steam Generators

People call me up and speak to me after they get so tired of calling all the various Steam Generator companies getting nowhere because none of the sales agents will say anything about their competitors. Hey I don’t have a problem with that per se I even think it’s respectful and professional and should be encouraged but for the consumer it’s a terrible situation to be in because how would they be able to compare a brand that uses a Single tank design with another brand that uses two tanks!? 

Unfortunately there is hardly any info on the internet to figure all of these confusing differences out in order to make the best purchase possible.
Well the good news is that I do provide this kind of info and second the truth is that a lot of the confusion on the part of the consumer is many times about the differences in features between the brands. What is the truth? There really are not that many actual unique design differences between the generators. Don’t get me wrong there are REAL differences between brands but just not as many as these companies make consumers believe there is. What is also true is that I would never recommend getting an old generation steam generator. How can you tell if it’s an older generation with also cheap components? Easy they are almost always the cheapest generators on the block and they have a very weak warranty.

So what’s up with the whole Single vs. Dual/Two Tank thing?
One word..MMmmmmmarketing! The unique ‘benefits’ cited by the companies that put two tanks in their generators can be accomplished traditionally with one tank! I would say the only exceptionally unique difference would be that technically two tanks could hold more steam which could be useful if you had a REALLY big steam room like maybe in a commercial setting. But even this is not necessarily true because to produce more steam faster water flow into one large tank along with higher kilowatts flowing to the heating elements will produce more steam if needed…

So if a company is trying to sell you on the two tank concept don’t just write them off as a company with a poor quality product and don’t think that they are deceptive and have bad service. I’m not suggesting that at all because this is not the case according to my research and time in the industry. I’m just sharing this information to point out that many companies have made an extra effort in their manufacturing and design process to appear different than all the other brands. This was a strategy that worked for a while many years back but it has been quite a long time since several competing brands all now offer two tanks in their generators. 

At some point again there will be a new feature that some company will come out with and whenever that happens do your homework and check if the new ‘benefit’ truly is a functional outcome that is different and cannot be created by an older traditional steam generator design.

Constant Steam VS Cycled Steam
The question I always is do I want my steam always or steam that goes on and off.
The steam generators that cycle on and off heat up the room slower and there are times when there is a lag in steam. The higher end steam generators have less of this lag time. The continuous models (Thermasol) heat up the room much quicker and stays more constant. If you set the room to 105, then at 104 degrees on the constant steam generators it kicks back on. 

Note: the highest temperature steam generators go to is 120 degrees. Beware of getting too high of a power of steam if using residentially as too much can burn your feet or wherever the steam hits. 

Also, with the constant steam, it puts out less gallons per minute. In a 20 minute session a 1 gallon output feels way different than 2 gallons. Many people prefer a lighter steam and some like the heavy steam. A continuous steam generator will always heat my core much quicker than pulsed steam. Some people like to keep it hot the whole time while others don't mind the cold spots as they want to cool down without getting out of the steam room to cool off.

Continous vs pulsed steam: how it feels different
The best way to show what it looks like is the continuous type have a constant fluffy cloud of steam. The on and off type has a really big cloud, much more rich but the vapor is heavier and the cloud stay less long. If using essential oils, the continuous type holds the oils in the air much longer. It can get expensive if using oils in a steam room where it gets cold and hot too many times as the oil will drop down to the floor and go down the drain.

Note: I never use a generator that is rated for over 2kw over the recommended size for the cubic feet of the steam room. Even though the temperature is the same, the amount of steam if too much comes out at once can heath the body too quickly. When my heartbeat starts beating too fast I want to get out sooner. I like to heat my core slower so I can stay in longer and reach the point till I want to get out much longer.

Also, the cycled type steam genitors tend to be more drippy. It depends on how long it stays on. When the steam is off the ceiling can cool down quicker and start dripping steam. With continuous steam, it stays hot longer on the ceiling of the steam room and doesn't condense as quick and less drippy. If not using a steam room with a slant this can make a big difference in drippiness.
